New management at the College of Professional Pilots of Canada!

Recognizing the need to unify pilots across all segments, the CPP Board is pleased to announce the engagement of two support staff to shepherd the association’s growth and provide added member support:

Both Mark and Louise will be available to take calls from the public and members on all aspects related to the mission, vision and values of the CPPC

Two of our board members will be attending the Fit to Fly workshop organized by Transport Canada the 6th and 7th of June in Ottawa. If you have any feedback or concerns, feel free to contact us and leave a comment.

We are looking to gather your stories and experiences regarding upgrading to an ATPL-H.

It seems that there are pilots working for certain helicopter operators and operating two-crew who are unable to have their PPC count towards the skill requirement on their ATPL-H application for license due to the fact that their aircraft are certified single pilot.

Firstly, consider that CARs 703.86 requires at least 2 pilots in commercial helicopter operation, minus some exceptions, regardless of aircraft minimum crew.

421.35 (5) which lays out the skill requirement for the application of an ATPL-H states that the applicant shall have demonstrated in the last 12 months […] as pilot-in-command of a helicopter required to be operated with a co-pilot, both normal and emergency procedures and manoeuvres appropriate to the privileges of an Airline Transport Pilot Licence - Helicopter.

TC refuses to issue the ATPL-H on the basis that the minimum crew on the helicopter is 1, interpreting this subpart as requiring an aircraft type certificated with a minimum crew of 2, as opposed to operating two-crew.

The bottom line is that at certain operators, there will be pilots that will be restricted to flying as co-pilots for the rest of their careers there since they have no hope of upgrading to ATPL-H. Upgrading privately by renting a 2-crew certificated helicopter is simply unrealistically and cost-prohibitive.

This problem is being seen at operators with AW109SP – A109 – BH430 – BH429; though other helicopter models can also set up this roadblock.

Dear members,

I write to update you on the developments and discussions that took place in Brampton on September 23rd at our most recent board meeting.

In the morning, after reports from the executives and board members, the board was then dissolved. Voting took place to establish and recognize new volunteers to hold the positions of President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary. They are, respectively, Tom Machum, Mike Zaytsoff, Michelle Chiasson, and myself, Armel Cloarec.

We would like to thank the previous members of the executive for their collaboration and tireless work to establish a solid foundation upon which we can build for the coming years.

Indeed, we are looking towards the future with great enthusiasm. In the coming weeks, you will notice many changes to our website as well as an increased social media presence. It is all part of a renewed and concerted effort to increase our presence amongst Canada's pilot community and communicate our goals and vision to a greater audience. Stay tuned, as an announcement for a webinar is forthcoming as well.

To complement this move, in a few months, we will be publishing an online survey aimed at all Canadian pilots. In meantime, we would also like to highlight our Pilot Income Protection program (PIP). Recently proven to be all that it promised when one of our members lost their licence, we encourage you to look into it on our website if you do not have coverage or would like to augment your current coverage. It is affordable and very good value according to our member's experience.

Additionally, our mentorship program is steaming ahead. The team is eager and ready, and we invite you to touch base whether it be for a simple one-time call for resume advice, or a full-fledged career support over a longer period. At the time of this writing, Mentors outnumber protegés.

I am beginning to ramble. There are many items more to report, so I would like to close with the announcement that the board has voted unanimously to contribute $2000 to the Air Cadet League of Canada, as a gesture of continued support to the young pilot community.

I end with a reminder to renew your membership if you have not done so already. We are really driven to expand our membership base and we thank you for your continued support in the pursuit of our shared vision.

Join us in Ottawa on Friday, April 17th to hear from former Concorde pilot John Hutchinson speak about what it was like to fly one of the world's most famous airliners. This event is being held at the Canadian Aviation Museum starting at 1800h and everyone is welcome. Following Captain Hutchinson’s speech there will be an informal networking session where pilots can learn more about an organization we recently became affiliated with, the Honourable Company of Air Pilots. This event will be a good opportunity for pilots early in their careers to make contacts with more senior members of our industry.

Join us in greater Toronto on Sunday, April 19th to hear from Hon. Colonel Gerald Haddon of the Royal Canadian Air Force speak about Canada's first pilot, J.A.D. McCurdy. This event is being held at the Brampton Flight Centre starting at 1800h and everyone is welcome. Following Hon. Colonel Haddon's speech there will be an informal networking session where pilots can learn more about an organization we recently became affiliated with, the Honourable Company of Air Pilots. This event will be a good opportunity for pilots early in their careers to make contacts with more senior members of our industry.

Dear friends in Toronto:

The College of Pilots is hosting a Meet & Greet at Arizona’s Restaurant (215 Carlingview in Toronto) on Thursday, March 27th, Appetizers will be provided. The event starts at 1800 and the Colleges’ Board of Directors will be present to answer your questions and address your concerns.

We hope to have the chance to meet you there.
